Friday, 20 July: We have the whole afternoon free, so we walk down to the sea. On a little hill opposite the ferry port is the old fort, built in 1580 to defend Tórshavn harbour against attacks by pirates. Now there is a little lighthouse on its grounds.
The main building behind the wall on the left, a little outhouse on the right... |
...and the town of Tórshavn in the background. |
Below: a canon, and the island of Nólsoy across the sea.
Right: more canons, and the lighthouse. |
|
There are still many houses with turf tops, even in the downtown area. |
Harbour in the afternoon - with more turf-roofed houses. |
For a town of 18,000 inhabitants, Tórshavn seems to have so many hair salons. Here's one of them: Salong McGavin. |
One for Jez: a kid's sandal left outside our hotel. (It was still there when we left two days later.) |
In the early evening, we go on a guided excursion - which is supposed to take up on the mountain road for a view across the islands, but Streymoy is still covered in low hanging clouds, so there won't be much point! Instead the guide & driver take us on a tour along the coast and onto the Eysturoy island.
UsaKousa outside a little church. |
A picnic on Eysturoy. (Our guide, our fellow passengers - a Danish couple - UsaKousa and our driver.) |
The view. |
Sorry, I can't stop photographing clouds... |
