After just over an hour's bird watching, the boat turns around to head back to Stykkishólmur.
The guide announces "now we say good bye to the birds, and have a look at something else:
the bottom of the sea" - the part of the cruise that Akiko has been most looking forward to :-)
So we all gather at the back of the deck and watch the steward throw the net into the sea. They have some
mini bottles of white wine on sale, but I haven't seen anyone going for it - we're all too busy watching
the action.

After a few minutes, the net is hauled up, and the catch of the day is laid out in front of us.

It's mostly baby scallops, plus quite a few sea urchins, and some other shellfish.
There are some weird looking guys too...
...and some more!
The steward and stewardess open up the scallops for us to taste.
They then open the sea urchins - "Icelandic sea viagra" is what they call them :-)
...and scoop the roe onto scallop shells.
The uni is very sweet and delicious. Akiko's had 4 or 5 portions like this one, and 3 baby scallops.
Afterwards, the shells and everything is thrown back into the sea, and the work area washed
down with water.
And so now back to land... Some people have kept some shells as souvenirs to take home :-) |
