Part 5: Korpudalur - Flateyri

Tuesday, 29 June. The clouds have cleared during the night and it's a bright day again. While having our morning coffee (and a fag) on the front terrace, we witness a traffic jam à la Korpudalur (right). It's not too serious, but it could be frustrating if you were driving and got stuck behind those sheep!
Ásta drives us to Flateyri, another small village down the fjord from Korpudalur, and we have an hour to wander around before she comes to pick us up again. First we go up the dam structure they have built on the mountain slope - to deflect snow avalanches, after two major avalanches killed 20 people in the village in 1995 - which are covered in pretty purple wood lilies(??) There is a little walking path leading up to an observation deck, where you have a great view of the village and the fjord.

We then walk along the main street of the village. This house, with a big front porch facing west, looks ideal for sitting out in the sun late at night, with a cool drink next to you :-)

And this seems to be Flateyri's version of traffic jam... What a busy day!

A little round house just outside the village. It was originally used for storing whale oil before export, but now they make fishing baits here. Ásta thinks it would be a nice art gallery, except not many people would come out all this way to see the shows ;-)
