Monday 2 April: We arrive in Manhattan on early Sunday evening, but it's raining - the sign that Usakousa are tired - so we just go to bed early to get our beauty sleep.

Monday is another sunny day, so we go shopping, and then meet Caspar for lunch at Spring Street Natural. (Ours is a grilled portobello mushroom salad.)
Sushi evening with Fast at Hasaki on East 9th. We sit at the counter, and while pondering what to order, we see someone else's order being created in front of us - a beautiful collection of reds and whites, almost like a study in gradation - well, except for those 2 oranges, which were added right at the end.

Our sushi order also comes in a nice combination of subtle hues.

So is our salad - and it's one of the tastiest seaweed salad we've ever had!

Aji (horse mackerel) tataki & tako (octopus) in vinegar are delicious too.

Anago (sea eel) looks good, so we order some of those, and a few more uni and, and...
Tuesday 3 April: In the late afternoon, we go to see Jiro Dreams of Sushi, a documentary film about the owner chef of the Michelin 3-star Sikiyabashi Jiro in Tokyo, which makes us hungry. Fast then takes us to a couple of food shops nearby in South Village...
Joe's Dairy in Sullivan Street. We sit on steps across the road and munch on their homemade smoked mozarella - yum!
After that, we nip into Tomoe in Thompson Street, to sample a few pieces of the best sashimi downtown. (Sorry, I'm too busy eating to take any photos here...)

Wednesday 4 April: Last minute shopping before our flight home. A show window in Prince Street, SoHo, has bear mannequins.

Delicious Japanese chocolate by a company called Kyotofu, available from Dean & Deluca's. We eat 2 on the street after lunch, here are what's managed to survive until we got home to Berlin.
Then we meet Fast, who takes us on a quick tour around Essex Street Market, and then to a soba joint for lunch - but we're not allowed to tell you where it is, as the place is small and very popular, Fast doesn't want the word to spread any more... ;-)

Usakousa waiting eagerly for their lunch.

Ours is with daikon oroshi & watercress. Very good!
As we're flying from the new American Airlines (ie. OneWorld) terminal at JFK, I'd hoped there would be a British Airways lounge, but no, BA's still in the old terminal. So we're stuck in the AA lounge, where the food offer is pretty limited. Still, they have bunny-size sweets, and I can try the New England Clam Chowder (which I don't think I've ever had in the USA before...)
